Flood Watch

During a local emergency, it can be challenging to stay up to date on the terms being used for flooding.

Learn the terms listed below so you know what level of preparedness you should take.

Flood Watch: Flooding is possible. Listen to weather radio, commercial radio, or TV for information.

Flash Flood Watch: Flash Flooding is possible. Be prepared to move to higher ground; listen to weather radio, commercial radio, or TV for information.

Flood Warnings: Flooding is occurring or will occur soon; if advised to evacuate, do so immediately. 

Flash Flood Warnings: A flash flood is occurring; seek higher ground on foot immediately. 

Floods are ranked as one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. Whether you live near a coastline, along city streets or in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert, there is potential for suffering flood damage. According to the NFIP (National Flood Insurance Program), houses in the United Stated have a 26% chance of being damaged by a flood during the course of a 30 year mortgage.
